Introduction
As we get closer to our own time, the amount of material grows. In this course, we look at each century from the 1600s on. The first session of the course is a discussion on empires. The third session excerpts the Jacobite uprisings out of the 1600s/1700s as the outcome are quite consequential for the Gaels. The various treaties of union will feature, as does the development of the British Empire.
Throughout this program I try, whenever possible, to take the point of view from the Gaelic world – as best as can be done. Often this puts us in opposition to what I call ‘the default narrative,’ challenging assumptions often made when history is only obtained through official channels. That history often portrays an inevitability of outcome. Why bother learning more about what happened by considering other points of view? People are complex and so is history. To understand our present we need to look at our past – all of it. Only then can we made decisions about what kind of future we want to bring to fruition.
Note: the numbering system is for the entire program, which is why this part of the index starts with 6.
